2 Comments Getting Alone Time at College
College is a very social time and there is always something to do and someone with which to do it. This makes for some great times, but if you’re an introvert, you probably need some time alone before you can truly enjoy time with others. If you are one of the many people who can only be truly happy when you make time to be by yourself as well as with others, here is how you can find time to be alone:
- Be an early riser. By waking up an hour or two early, you can find time to go for a quiet walk, read for enjoyment, exercise, meditate, or do anything you want to do. Since so many college students stay up late and sleep in, the campus will be blissfully peaceful in the early morning hours.
- Do your laundry. Since most students wait until weekends to do laundry, find a time during a weeknight, when the laundry room will be deserted. Do your laundry then to sneak in some quiet, peaceful time.
- Have a Saturday Breakfast. Very few college students are up early on Saturday mornings, making it a great time to be alone. Try to be to the cafeteria as soon as it opens and bring a favorite book. Enjoy your breakfast in a quiet corner and relax.
- Go for a walk. Walking, especially with your favorite music playing through your headphones, can be a great stress reliever. Just make sure you put your safety first. Walk during daylight hours and stick to populated areas.
- Go for a drive. If you have your own car, claim a Sunday morning to take a leisurely drive through the surrounding town. There will be less traffic on early Sundays and your drive will give you the chance to discover great little places you might not know about.
- Have an early dinner. It won’t take you long to discover when the dinner rush happens in the campus dining hall. Try to get there early every once in a while so you can enjoy your dinner in relative peace.
- Go off the beaten path. Most buildings have hallways and rooms that are seldom used. Find these areas and make use of them to write in your journal, catch up on your reading, or do whatever you want.
- Be alone in public. While you are at college, it can be extremely difficult to ever find time to be completely alone. For the next best thing, go to a mall or park where you don’t know anyone. Find a comfortable spot and people watch while you think things through.
Although it can be almost impossible to find time alone while you are at college, a dedicated introvert can find a way. Spend some time scooping out your campus for private areas and quiet times and take advantage of them fully. Soon, you will find that you can sneak in your peaceful alone time and, in doing so, will start to enjoy your time with others even more fully.
